In short: If you live in Venice, Nokomis, Osprey, or Lakewood Ranch and you are searching for neuropathy treatment, the first question is not which clinic — it is which kind of neuropathy you have. Numbness and burning that started in both feet usually belongs with a neurologist and your physician. Numbness, tingling, or burning in the arms and hands, or symptoms that change with neck position, often starts in the neck, and the top of the neck is the part no standard neuropathy workup measures. Lavender Family Chiropractic, at University Parkway and Whitfield Avenue in Sarasota, evaluates that region with 3D imaging and corrects it without twisting. Call (941) 243-3729.
Why so many Venice and Lakewood Ranch patients are searching for neuropathy treatment
Two things make neuropathy a bigger subject on this coast than almost anywhere else. The first is age: Venice and the communities along the Gulf have some of the oldest populations in Florida, and the two most common causes of peripheral neuropathy — diabetes and the slow wear of the cervical spine — both climb steeply after sixty. The second is that neuropathy is a word that covers many different problems, and the clinics that advertise “neuropathy treatment” in Sarasota and Venice treat very different things. Some offer laser or electrical therapy for diabetic nerve damage in the feet. Some are pain-management practices. Some are supplement programs. Patients drive from Lakewood Ranch to Venice and back trying each one, without anyone first answering the basic question: where is the nerve signal going wrong?
That question has a short list of possible answers, and the answer decides who should treat you.
Which neuropathy do you have? The three patterns
Pattern one: both feet first, creeping upward. Numbness, tingling, burning, or loss of feeling that began in both feet at about the same time and has slowly climbed toward the ankles and calves over months or years is the classic picture of a systemic peripheral neuropathy. The StatPearls overview of neuropathy lays out the causes — diabetes above all, then alcohol, vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disease, chemotherapy, kidney disease, autoimmune and hereditary conditions. This pattern belongs with your physician and a neurologist. Blood work and nerve conduction studies find the cause, and treating the cause is the treatment. We do not treat systemic neuropathy, and we will tell you so on the phone if that is what you describe.
Pattern two: one arm or hand, following a path. Numbness or tingling that runs from the neck into one shoulder, down the arm, and into particular fingers — the thumb and index finger, or the ring and little finger — and that changes when you turn or tilt your head is usually not peripheral neuropathy at all. It is a nerve root being irritated where it leaves the cervical spine. A review of cervical radiculopathy describes this pattern in detail and why it is so often mistaken for carpal tunnel, “pinched nerves” in the arm, or neuropathy. This pattern starts in the neck, and the neck is where it should be evaluated.
Pattern three: nothing adds up. Symptoms in the hands and feet that come and go, move around, flare with stress or poor sleep, and that nerve studies cannot explain. This is the group that gets told “your tests are normal” and sent home. A review of descending pain modulation explains part of why: the brainstem and upper spinal cord contain the circuitry that turns nerve signals up or down before they reach awareness, and when that circuitry is disturbed, sensations can be amplified without any damage to the nerve itself. The top of the neck sits directly against that circuitry.
Where the top of the neck fits — and where it doesn’t
The atlas (C1) and axis (C2) are the two bones that carry the head and surround the lowest part of the brainstem. Three things pass through or alongside them that matter for nerve symptoms: the spinal cord itself, the vertebral arteries that supply the brainstem, and a dense field of position sensors that feed the balance and pain-regulation centers. A misalignment at this level does not cause diabetic neuropathy and it does not repair damaged nerves. What it can do is irritate the cervical nerve roots below it through altered posture and loading, and disturb the pain-modulation circuitry above it. For pattern-two and pattern-three patients, that is often the piece that has been missing.
Our evaluation is built to sort the three patterns. We take a careful history, examine the neck and the nerve pathways, run functional nervous system scans, and when the case warrants it, image the upper cervical spine with 3D cone beam CT — which shows the position of the atlas and axis in a way that a standard X-ray or a brain MRI cannot. If the neck is involved, we correct it with a low-force, precisely calculated adjustment and re-measure to confirm the change. If the neck is not involved, you leave with a clear answer and a referral, which is worth the drive on its own. A review of the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy describes the medical workup we expect you to have had, or will send you for, before or alongside our care.
Neuropathy treatment options near Venice and Lakewood Ranch: who treats what
| Option | What it addresses | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Neurologist (Venice, Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch) | Confirms the diagnosis with nerve conduction studies and EMG; identifies the cause | Every new neuropathy — this comes first |
| Primary care / endocrinology | Blood sugar, B12, thyroid, medication review | Pattern one: systemic causes |
| Podiatry | Foot care, footwear, wound prevention | Diabetic neuropathy in the feet |
| Pain management | Medication such as gabapentin or duloxetine; injections | Symptom control when the cause cannot be reversed |
| Physical therapy | Strength, balance, nerve-gliding exercises | Balance and fall risk; cervical radiculopathy alongside other care |
| Upper cervical evaluation and care (Lavender Family Chiropractic, Sarasota) | Measures and, when indicated, corrects the position of the atlas and axis that can irritate cervical nerve roots and disturb central pain modulation | Pattern two and pattern three: arm and hand symptoms, neck-related symptoms, “normal tests” symptoms |
These are not competing camps. Most of our neuropathy patients from Venice and Lakewood Ranch are also under a neurologist’s care, and we send records both ways.
What the research says
I keep this section honest. The StatPearls chapter on neuropathy and the review of peripheral neuropathy diagnosis establish that neuropathy is largely a medical condition with medical causes, and that a proper workup comes first. The cervical radiculopathy review and a further discussion of the characteristics and differential diagnosis of cervical radiculopathy establish that the neck is a genuine source of arm and hand nerve symptoms and that telling it apart from other causes takes a specific examination. The descending pain modulation review establishes that the brainstem and upper cord regulate how strongly nerve signals are felt. Together they support what this page says: the neck can be the source, the upper cervical region is anatomically relevant to how nerve signals are processed, and systemic neuropathy belongs with your physician. Results from upper cervical care vary by person, and we measure before and after rather than promise.

Common questions about neuropathy treatment near Venice and Lakewood Ranch
Which specialist treats neuropathy near Venice? Start with a neurologist for the diagnosis; there are neurology practices in Venice and Sarasota that do nerve conduction testing. Your primary physician manages the systemic causes. An upper cervical chiropractor evaluates the top of the neck when symptoms are in the arms and hands, change with neck position, or persist with normal tests.
Do you treat diabetic neuropathy? No. Diabetic neuropathy is a medical condition and its treatment is blood sugar control and medical care. If you have diabetic neuropathy in the feet and also neck-related symptoms in the arms, we address the neck component alongside your physician’s care.
My nerve conduction study was normal. Why am I still numb? Nerve conduction studies measure the large nerves in the limbs. They do not measure small-fiber function, central pain modulation, or the position of the upper cervical spine. “Normal” rules some things out; it does not rule the neck in or out.
Is upper cervical care safe for an older adult with neuropathy? The correction is low-force and based on imaging, with no twisting or rotation of the neck, which is why we see many patients in their seventies and eighties from Venice and Lakewood Ranch. The evaluation also tells us when a correction is not appropriate.
How is this different from the laser or electrical neuropathy clinics? Those approaches aim at the nerves in the feet. We aim at the neck. They are for different patterns, and the evaluation is what tells you which pattern you have.
How many visits will it take? It depends on what we find and how long it has been there. We set the plan from your imaging and examination, re-measure at set points, and tell you plainly if the response is not what we expect.
Do you see patients from Lakewood Ranch? Many. Lakewood Ranch is the closest community to our office; University Parkway runs straight to our door.
