Our complete guide to migraine care in Sarasota covers the causes we see, the imaging we use, and what to expect at an evaluation.

Migraines are debilitating headaches that affect millions of people worldwide, often causing intense pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. While there are various treatment options available, one alternative approach gaining attention is upper cervical chiropractic care. This specialized branch of chiropractic focuses on the alignment and adjustment of the upper neck vertebrae, known as the upper cervical spine. In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of upper cervical chiropractic for migraines, shedding light on how this non-invasive and drug-free treatment method can potentially provide relief and improve the quality of life for migraine sufferers.

Understanding Migraines and Their Impact

Migraines are not ordinary headaches; they are a neurological condition characterized by recurring moderate to severe headaches that can last for hours or even days. Alongside throbbing pain, episodes often come with additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine attacks can significantly impact one’s daily activities, including work, social life, and overall well-being. Unfortunately, the exact cause of migraines remains unclear, making treatment options somewhat challenging.

Conventional Treatments

Typically, treatment involves a combination of lifestyle changes, pain relief medications, and preventive measures. However, medications may not always be effective and can have undesirable side effects. This is where alternative approaches like upper cervical chiropractic come into play. Unlike traditional medicine, which focuses on symptom management, chiropractic care aims to address the root cause of the issue by optimizing spinal alignment and nervous system function.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic: How It Works

Upper cervical chiropractic centers on the relationship between the upper neck vertebrae (the atlas and axis) and the central nervous system. The atlas is the topmost vertebra that connects the spine to the skull, while the axis allows for the rotation of the head. If misalignments or subluxations occur in these vertebrae, it can disrupt the normal function of the nervous system, potentially contributing to various health problems, including migraines.

Benefits of Upper Cervical Chiropractic

1. Addressing the root cause

By focusing on correcting misalignments in the upper neck, upper cervical chiropractic aims to alleviate pressure on the nerves and restore optimal nerve function. This approach targets the underlying cause of symptoms, potentially leading to long-lasting relief.

2. Non-invasive and drug-free

Upper cervical chiropractic offers a non-invasive and drug-free treatment option, making it an appealing choice for individuals seeking natural approaches to managing migraines. It eliminates the need for pain medications that may have adverse side effects or potential dependency.

3. Individualized treatment

Upper cervical chiropractors assess each patient’s specific condition and tailor the treatment accordingly. By using precise diagnostic techniques and specialized adjustments, they aim to restore proper alignment to the upper cervical spine, promoting overall spinal health and potentially reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines.

4. Holistic approach

Upper cervical chiropractors often adopt a holistic approach, considering the interplay between the upper neck vertebrae and other factors that may contribute to migraines, such as posture, lifestyle, and stress levels. They may provide recommendations for lifestyle modifications and exercises that can complement the chiropractic adjustments and support long-term migraine management.

Upper cervical chiropractic offers a unique perspective and potential benefits for individuals seeking relief from migraines. By addressing misalignments in the upper neck vertebrae, this specialized chiropractic approach aims to restore proper nerve function, potentially alleviating the root cause of migraines. With its non-invasive nature, lack of drug dependency, individualized treatment, and holistic approach, upper cervical chiropractic serves as a promising alternative for migraine sufferers. However, it is essential to consult with a qualified upper cervical chiropractor and consider the specific needs and characteristics of each individual before pursuing this form of treatment.

What the Research Says About Upper Cervical Care for Migraine

Migraine is far more than a bad headache. It affects over a billion people worldwide and ranks as a leading cause of disability, particularly in people under 50 (Ashina, N Engl J Med 2020). Neurologists now describe it as a disorder of how the brain processes sensory information, with the trigeminovascular system and the brainstem at the center of each attack (Goadsby et al., Physiol Rev 2017). Standard care follows that model: acute medications to stop an attack, preventive medications to reduce how often attacks come, and trigger management in between. These tools help many people, but they aim at the attack itself rather than at any structural input feeding it, which is where the neck enters the conversation.

The upper neck is wired into migraine anatomy. Pain fibers from the top three cervical segments converge on the same trigeminocervical complex that carries head pain, which is why neck problems can feed headache and headache can be felt in the neck (Bogduk & Govind, Lancet Neurol 2009). In a prospective study, neck pain showed up during more migraine attacks than nausea did (Calhoun et al., Headache 2010). On treatment, a 2019 meta-analysis found spinal manipulation reduced migraine days and pain intensity, though its authors asked for larger and better trials (Rist et al., Headache 2019). Our approach to that upper-neck component is to take 3D imaging of the atlas, deliver a correction matched to what the imaging shows, and re-measure so progress is tracked rather than assumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the upper neck relate to migraines?

The upper neck feeds the trigeminocervical complex, the brainstem region where migraine pain signals are generated and amplified. When the atlas sits out of position at the junction of skull and spine, irritation from the upper neck can lower the threshold for a migraine to start. Upper cervical care corrects that alignment with a precise, low-force Knee Chest correction. We measure the position on 3D CBCT imaging and track nervous system regulation with thermography before and after each correction.

Can upper cervical care work alongside conventional migraine treatments?

Yes. Medication decisions stay with your neurologist or prescribing physician, and serious causes of headache should be ruled out by a physician first. We work alongside that medical care, addressing the structural piece they are not treating: the position of the atlas and axis. Many migraine patients continue their current plan while we correct the alignment, and we share imaging with your doctors on request. Results vary by person.

What does an upper cervical correction for migraines feel like?

The Knee Chest correction is low force, with no twisting, cracking, or rotation of the neck. You rest on a specially designed table and we deliver a precise correction to the atlas calculated from your 3D imaging. Most patients describe light pressure rather than a thrust. Afterward you rest briefly, and we re-scan with thermography to confirm the nervous system responded. Results are confirmed, not assumed.

How soon do migraine patients notice a change?

Results vary by person. Some patients notice a shift in frequency or intensity within the first few weeks, while others with a long migraine history need more time for the correction to hold. We do not promise a timeline. Instead we re-check thermography at every visit, so you can see whether your nervous system is regulating more evenly rather than guessing from how one day felt.

Do you see migraine patients from Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton?

We do. Our office is at the corner of University Parkway and Whitfield in Sarasota, minutes from Lakewood Ranch, University Park, and Bradenton, and about thirty minutes from Venice. A migraine evaluation includes a history, 3D CBCT imaging of the upper cervical spine, and a baseline thermography scan. If the upper neck is not involved, we say so and refer you.
